Regular launch of
Oxford Pakistan program for Pakistani students
London 02 October 2021) The Oxford Pakistan program
for Pakistani students has officially started. In this regard, a function was
also held at the Pakistan High Commission two days ago. A major step has been
taken to highlight Pakistani students and research related to Pakistan at
Oxford University. The program, which started in London on September 30, aims
to promote various Pakistan-related activities at the University of Oxford.
The program was
designed by Oxford University Professor Adeel Malik, Materials Science Lecturer
Dr. Talha J. Pirzada and renowned lawyer Haroon Zaman. Special lectures on
Pakistan will be arranged at Oxford.
The program is also
supported by the Oxford University, the Pakistan High Commission in London and
the British Embassy in Pakistan. Businessmen and Pakistanis living in the UK
have pledged لاکھ 500,000.
Malala Yousafzai, a
Nobel laureate, is also supporting the program, announcing a major scholarship
program under which every year a girl from a backward area of Pakistan is
educated at Oxford University. The program will create new opportunities for
deserving Pakistani students, said Moazzam Ahmad Khan, Pakistan's High
Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
A recorded message from
the British High Commissioner in Islamabad, Dr. Christian Turner, was also
broadcast during the ceremony. He said that 1.6 million Pakistanis living in
the UK were acting as a bridge between the two countries. Oxford University
Professor Adeel Malik said Pakistan was still viewed from a limited and blurred
perspective on security, extremism and militancy, adding that the world was
increasingly attracted to the growing middle class and investment in technology
in Pakistan.
Twenty-one professors
and fellows from Oxford were present, including four principals and heads of
Oxford colleges. They include Alan Rasberger, former editor of The Guardian and
the outgoing principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Christine Gerrard, the current
principal, Dr. Nick Brann, principal of Linker College, Sir Tim Hutchins,
president of Wolfson College, and director of the Oxford University's
International Engagement Office. Sarah Khan, director of undergraduate
admissions at Ed Nash and Oxford University, and Elizabeth Kiss, warden at
Rhodes House, attended the event in a virtual manner. Many wealthy Pakistanis
pledged financial support for the program.
